Learning Objectives
The objective of this lesson is to provide the learner with an in-depth overview of what distance education is. Upon completing this lesson, students will be able to:
- Define distance education
- Identify two advantages and disadvantages of distance education
- Discuss the four components of distance education and two delivery formats discussed in this lesson
Media and Rationale
As technology continues to evolve, there has been an increase in access to learning through the availability of online distance education (Campbell, and Khalideen, 2008). Teaching in an online format is relatively new and many don’t understand what it is, how the process of continuing education online works, what the advantages are, what challenges learners face in an online environment or terminology related to distance education (Ko and Rossen, 2008). This lesson serves as the introduction to distance education, related terms and providing an understanding of what distance education is.
The technologies that will be used to deliver the lesson will be the internet and Youtube. The learner will view the narrated video presentation that will be delivered through Camtasia 7. A narrated video presentation is excellent for taking learners through a series of steps (Ko and Rossen, 2008). Camtasia will be used to organize and present the content of the lesson in an organized manner. The lesson will also include audio and text data as well as links to required quizzes and evaluations to complete the lesson. Audio alone or in a narrated slide presentation can be an effective instructional method and can be used to replace a lecture (Ko, and Rossen, 2008). Further, Ko and Rossen (2008) suggest that utilizing text on a web page provides learners with the opportunity to take notes and reflect on the lesson.
